Beach & Island
Kalanggaman
One of the most photographed sandbars in the Philippines, and it earns it.
About this destination
What makes it worth it
Kalanggaman is the island that ends up on every Philippines travel list, and unlike most, it actually delivers. A 400-metre sandbar juts into water that shifts through every shade of blue: electric turquoise at the edges, deep cobalt further out. There's no road to it, no resort on it, and limited daily visitor numbers keep it from feeling overrun.
Getting there is part of the experience: a ferry crossing from Bantayan to Palompon, Leyte, then a two-hour bangka ride across open water. We handle all logistics. You arrive with time to explore both sides of the bar, swim, and have lunch before the return trip.
Things to do
- Sandbar walking at low tide
- Swimming in deep blue water
- Snorkeling (gear available for rent on island)
- Picnic lunch on the beach
Best time to visit
February to May for the clearest water and calmest crossings. The two-hour bangka ride makes rough-season visits uncomfortable.
How to get there
Our private trip leaves from Maya Port in Daanbantayan or from Malapascua, northern Cebu, with the boat, entrance fee and a packed lunch included. On your own from Bantayan: ferry from Santa Fe to Palompon, Leyte (approx. 2 hours), then a bangka to the island (approx. 2 hours).

Common questions
Can I visit Kalanggaman as a day trip from Bantayan?
Yes, on your own: a ferry of about 2 hours from Santa Fe to Palompon, Leyte, then a bangka of about 2 hours to the island. Our own Kalanggaman trip leaves from Maya Port or Malapascua in northern Cebu instead, on a private boat for your group.
Is Kalanggaman worth the long trip?
Most guests think so. The 400-metre sandbar has no road and no resort, and limited daily visitor numbers keep it from feeling overrun.
Can I combine Kalanggaman with Biliran?
Yes. Biliran is reached via the same Leyte crossing to Palompon, so the two pair well on a longer trip.
